Sewer Smoke Testing Begins in Taroom

Banana Shire Council will commence sewer main smoke testing in Taroom from Monday, 13 October 2025, as part of its ongoing sewerage system maintenance program. The testing is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete.

This important work helps identify faults and improve the efficiency of the sewer network, contributing to better public health outcomes and environmental protection.

The testing involves the use of non-toxic smoke to detect cracks, leaks, and illegal connections in the sewer system. Residents may notice smoke in and around their properties during the testing period—this is normal and not a cause for concern.

Council crews will be:

  • Accessing and inspecting sewer chambers
  • Setting up smoke testing equipment
  • Taking photographs of areas of concern
  • Visiting properties with sewer manholes located within boundaries

Access to private properties may be required during this time. Work hours will generally be 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, although extended hours may be necessary on occasion. Affected residents will be notified on the day if additional time is needed.

Residents are asked to:

  • Secure pets during testing
  • Follow any instructions provided on the day, which may include temporarily limiting the use of toilets, showers, washing machines, dishwashers, or pool backwashing

There will be no interruption to sewerage or water services, and Council will make every effort to minimise noise, smoke, and vehicle movements.

Banana Shire Council thanks the Taroom community for their cooperation and understanding during this essential maintenance work.
