Census - Local Engagement Officers

The next Census is on Tuesday 11 August 2026. Everyone in Australia on Census night must be counted.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is hiring more than 30,000 people across Australia to support to 2026 Census.
From 5 January, there will be 130 Local Engagement Officer jobs available, including some in your council area.
The 2026 Census needs the right people in the right jobs. We appreciate your support in sharing the promotional resources provided to help us find the right people.
Local Engagement Officers
Local Engagement Officers have an important job, helping diverse communities in your council area to complete the Census.
They manage a team of local field staff and build relationships with community groups and key stakeholders. They coordinate information hubs and run sessions to support diverse population groups.
We’re looking for people who are connected to their community and have lived experienced and/or experience working with:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities
- people experiencing homelessness
- people living with a disability
- youth or older Australians.

- Use the resources in your stakeholder toolkit to share a social media post, put up a poster, and spread the word through your newsletter or website.
- Answer questions from your community using the key messages provided.
