Banana Shire Council Launches Flying Fox Roost Pilot
Published on 07 September 2026
Banana Shire Council is taking a proactive approach to managing flying fox activity with the introduction of innovative monitoring technology designed to provide valuable insights into local roost behaviour.
Council will commence a three-month monitoring trial using a satellite-enabled environmental monitoring system developed by Queensland-based company IoT Pty Ltd.
The initial phase of the project will focus solely on monitoring flying fox activity and collecting data. No deterrent measures will be activated during this period.
Mayor Cr Nev Ferrier said the trial would allow Council to better understand flying fox behaviour and support evidence-based decision making.
"Flying fox roosts can present challenges for nearby residents and community facilities, however it is important that any management decisions are informed by accurate information."
"This technology will provide Council with valuable data about roost activity, seasonal movement patterns and environmental conditions, helping us better understand the situation before considering any future actions."
The monitoring system uses thermal and acoustic sensors to remotely collect information about roost activity. Data can be transmitted via satellite and mobile networks, allowing information to be monitored without the need for frequent site inspections.
The project aligns with Council's commitment to exploring practical and innovative solutions to community concerns while ensuring any future management options comply with environmental and animal welfare requirements.
Mayor Ferrier said Council remained committed to balancing community expectations with the protection of native wildlife.
"This trial demonstrates Council's commitment to investigating new technologies and taking a measured, responsible approach to managing flying fox impacts within our communities."
Council will review the data collected during the monitoring period and keep the community informed as the project progresses.
