Banana Shire Council has appointed experienced local government executive Justin Hancock as its new Chief Executive Officer, with Mr Hancock set to commence on 2 November 2026.

Mr Hancock joins Banana Shire Council from Quilpie Shire Council, where he has served as Chief Executive Officer since 2021. With more than 17 years' experience in Queensland local government, he brings extensive expertise in financial management, governance, strategic planning, organisational leadership and community advocacy.

Mayor Nev Ferrier said Council was pleased to appoint a leader with a strong understanding of regional Queensland and a proven record of delivering outcomes for communities.

"We're excited to welcome Justin to Banana Shire. He brings valuable experience, a fresh perspective and a genuine commitment to regional communities, and we look forward to working with him," Mayor Nev Ferrier said.

"Justin has a strong track record in local government and understands the importance of delivering quality services, supporting communities and continually looking for ways to improve."

"We're confident he'll be a great fit for our organisation and will help us continue delivering positive outcomes for the people of Banana Shire."

At Quilpie Shire Council, Mr Hancock successfully led initiatives that strengthened organisational performance, enhanced workplace culture, increased community engagement and secured significant government funding. Under his leadership, innovative programs such as the Home Owner Grant and Q1000 initiatives contributed to the Council receiving the 2026 National Award for Outstanding Rural and Remote Council.

Mayor Nev Ferrier said Mr Hancock's experience would support Council as it continues delivering services, maintaining infrastructure and advocating for the needs of local communities.

"Our communities are at the heart of everything we do, and Justin's experience will help Council continue delivering the services, infrastructure and advocacy our residents expect," Mayor Nev Ferrier said.

"We're looking forward to working with Justin as we continue to deliver for our communities and plan for the future."

Mr Hancock said he was honoured to have been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Banana Shire Council.

"I am excited to join Banana Shire Council and look forward to working with the Mayor, Councillors, staff and community," Mr Hancock said.

"Banana Shire has a proud history, strong communities and significant opportunities ahead. I look forward to building on the excellent work already underway and working collaboratively to deliver positive outcomes for residents across the region."

Mayor Nev Ferrier also acknowledged the contribution of Interim Chief Executive Officer Andrew Ireland who was appointed to fill the position until a permanent appointment was made.

"Andrew has made a significant contribution to Council during his time with us, and I thank him for his professionalism, support and dedication," Mayor Nev Ferrier said.

"We wish Andrew all the very best for the future."
