Media Release:

The faces of the children at the Goovigen State School lit up when Banana Shire Council delivered and set-up the portable skate park in town in early February.

They couldn’t wait until the bell rang and school was out so they could test their skills on the ramps.

Just hours after the park was installed the students gathered around the facility for a photograph and sent Council a message through social media thanking them for bringing the ramps to their community.

Matilda, a year three student at Goovigen State School, said she has had fun practising her cool tricks at the skate park after school, while Simon said he liked that there was a variety of different ramps for him and his friends to use.

The mobile skate park and the concrete pads set up in various smaller towns in the shire were funded through the State Government’s Works for Queensland funding program.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said: “This mobile skate park is a great new facility for students from across Banana Shire, encouraging healthy physical activity in a variety of ways.

“As a huge basketball fan, I’m pleased to see the mobile skate park has been adapted to include basketball hoops, helping students to hone their basketball skills.

“It’s been funded with a $200,000 contribution from the Palaszczuk Government’s hugely successful $600 million Works for Queensland program.

“Works for Queensland is delivering great new community infrastructure throughout regional Queensland, while supporting local economies and more than 13,000 regional jobs.”

There are currently four pads set up to accommodate the mobile skate park in Wowan, Banana, Goovigen and Cracow. An additional two pads will be built in Baralaba and Jambin in April.

The mobile skate park will rotate between these towns, remaining in each town for about two months.

The concrete pads will also have basketball hoops and line marking installed to allow them to be used as half basketball courts when the skate park is not in town.
