Temporary closure of Taroom waste facility

Temporary closure of Taroom waste facility

Published: 23rd April 2020

Banana Shire Council’s landfill site at Taroom will be closed to the public from Wednesday 29 April 2020 up to and including Wednesday 6 May 2020.

The site is being closed to allow for major earthworks to be carried out, rending it unsafe to the public during this period.

A new landfill cell, located adjacent to the existing site, will be open for public use on Thursday 7 May.

Signs advising the public of how to dispose of waste will be erected at the new site and residents are urged to follow the directions on these signs.

Council’s wheelie bin kerb side collection service will continue to operate during the closure and residents are urged to hold onto other waste until the new site is opened.

The Taroom landfill site has also been the subject of several illegal dumping breaches including large volumes of commercial and industrial waste and waste that did not originate from the Taroom community.

The new landfill site will be more functional and user-friendly and will help alleviate the risk of waste dispersion around the landfill site and neighbouring properties.

Strict adherence to the correct disposal of waste at the new cell will be policed.
