Yellow lines highlight unsafe parking areas

Yellow lines highlight unsafe parking areas

Published: 10th June 2020

You have probably noticed some yellow painted lines popping up on some of our roads.
These yellow painted lines are being introduced as a road safety initiative.
Motorists are not permitted to park on the road where these yellow lines are located.
Motorists who park at these locations may in fact be endangering themselves and other road users.
These parking restrictions exist for a number of reasons. There may be a visual restriction that requires the area to be clear of parked cars so that others can drive through. It might be that a road design cannot cater for the space a parked car takes up. It could be that the location is too close to an intersection and to park a car there will cause a danger to other road users. You may even be restricting access to vehicles on a slip lane forcing them out into the path of traffic when they try and merge. Main Roads personnel and Council officers are not in the habit of painting a yellow line unless there is a specific reason to warrant it.
The law is clear. A driver must not stop at the side of a road marked with a continuous yellow edge line. An edge line means, a line marked along the road or near the far left or the far right hand side of the road. There does not need to be a sign accompanying the yellow line. The fact that there is a yellow line there creates the offence.
You can expect to be fined every time your vehicle is located at one of these spots.
Please consider others and park safely.
