Invasive tree to be removed from Moura cemetery

Banana Shire Council in consultation with family members have identified that a Moreton Bay fig (Ficus macrophylla) within the Moura Lawn Cemetery presents an integrity concern.

Whilst in its infancy, this type of tree possesses an aggressive root system and a trunk that reaches 2.4 mts in diameter. The root system has already started disturbing headstones with its root system visible over seven metres from the trunk base.

As a result of a meeting on-site, it was unanimously decided that the tree needs to be removed in order to prevent ongoing destruction of grave sites.

As part of the removal, rectification works will be completed to ensure the visual amenities of the cemetery are maintained with little disruption to the facility.

As part of Council’s ongoing commitment to the community, a Moura Cemetery Advisory Committee has been recommended to be formed to allow community involvement in the ongoing operations of the facility.
