Current Flood and Road Closure Update

The Banana Shire Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) met this morning Wednesday 1st December to discuss the localised flooding in the Shire.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a major flood warning for the Dawson River and a moderate warning for Callide Creek.

The Dawson River at Taroom is currently at 6.39 metres and steady.  Further rises are possible along the Dawson River with rises at Taroom to the major flood level of 7metres possible overnight Wednesday and into Thursday.

Major flooding overnight has caused a number of road closures in the Banana Shire.  

MAJOR ROAD CLOSURES INCLUDE:

  • Roma Taroom Road at Taroom
  • Leichardt Highway North of Theodore
  • Eidsvold Theodore Road Nth of Cracow
  • Burnett Highway North of Biloela.

BSC advises residents not to drive through floodwater and avoid any unnecessary travel at this stage.

Dawson River to Theodore

  • Major Flooding is possible at Taroom overnight Wednesday into Thursday
  • Moderate flooding possible at Theodore and Baralaba from Wednesday
  • Moderate flooding at Jambin
  • No further rainfall is expected in the next few days’

Theodore & Moura

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised the Dawson River at Theodore is currently at 10.10 metres and steady.  The Dawson River at Theodore may exceed the moderate flood level (11.00m) Thursday morning.

Moderate flooding may occur along the Dawson River downstream of Theodore.

The Dawson River at Moura is currently at 7.85 metres and rising.  The Dawson River at Moura is likely to remain above the minor flood level (6.00m) during Wednesday.

Baralaba

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that at Baralaba the levels are above the minor flood level of 4m.  The Dawson River at Baralaba may exceed the moderate flood level (7.50m) during Wednesday.

Jambin and Goovigen

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that minor flooding is occurring along Callide Creek between Jambin and Goovigen Wednesday morning.

The Callide Creek at Jambin is currently at 3.80 metres and rising, with minor flooding. The Callide Creek at Jambin may reach the moderate flood level (4.20m) Wednesday evening.

Biloela

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised The Kroombit Creek at Biloela is currently at 0.20 metres and steady.
