FLOOD DAMAGE TO ROADS IN BANANA SHIRE

FLOOD DAMAGE TO ROADS IN BANANA SHIRE

Published: 15th July 2022

During the months of June and July 2022, the Banana Shire Council area has received over 60 to 80mm of rain. This recent event, combined with the damage caused on our roads by the declared event in November/December 2021 plus the undeclared event in February/March 2020 has left some of the road network in an undesirable condition. Council currently has 6 maintenance graders and all are working full time on road maintenance.

It is expected that within the next week or two and assuming we don’t receive any further rain, most of the urgent boggy issues will dry out and most roads will be suitable for travel until Council can schedule the works, for the roads to be graded.

Council’s first step is to inspect and assess the level of damage on the road. Roads will be prioritised based on the following:

  1. Safety
  2. School Bus Runs
  3. Traffic Volume
  4. Agricultural/Industrial needs

Maintenance works will then be scheduled based on the above criteria. Residents will be contacted and given an estimate of when they can expect the maintenance crews to be on site.

After works associated with flood restoration is completed, Council will publish a progressive 3 monthly road maintenance schedules for unsealed roads. The schedules will consist of an ordered list of road names and subject to weather and unplanned circumstances.

We are asking residents for their understanding and patience.
