Banana Shire Unveils First Solar Farm, Pioneering Renewable Energy Future

Published: 21st June 2023

Banana Shire Council proudly announces the official opening of the Moura Solar Farm, marking the region's first operational solar farm. Owned by MYTILINEOS Energy & Metals, this significant milestone represents a historic leap towards a greener and more sustainable future. The farm was unveiled today in a momentous red ribbon cutting ceremony, symbolising the Shire’s commitment to renewable energy.

Construction of the 110MW (dc) solar farm was completed in an impressive 9-month timeframe, despite logistical challenges caused by the Covid outbreak. With approximately 6 kilometers of fencing, 7.5 kilometers of internal roads, and 8 kilometers of cabling, the Moura Solar Farm stands as a testament to innovative infrastructure development.

Mayor Nev Ferrier expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Today marks a turning point in our journey to renewables. While our rich coal reserves have long contributed to our economy, we recognise the need to embrace a balanced and sustainable approach to energy generation as we strive towards the government's zero-emission targets. The Moura Solar Farm showcases our commitment to large-scale renewable energy generation and positions us as pioneers in sustainable development."

In addition to clean energy generation, the Moura Solar Farm has also had a positive impact on the local community. The project has created four permanent residential jobs based in Banana Shire, including a Site Supervisor, 2 Site Technicians, and 1 Labourer. This demonstrates the farm's commitment to supporting local employment opportunities and contributing to the region's economic growth.

The team at Moura Solar Farm, in consultation with Cr Brooke Leo, Division 5 Councillor, is actively developing a community fund aimed at supporting and funding community-driven initiatives. This initiative will ensure that the solar farm contributes to the community in a positive way, enabling donations and funding for various projects that align with the needs and aspirations of the local residents.

With an impressive capacity of up to 110 megawatts, the Moura Solar Farm sets the stage for a brighter and more sustainable future in the Banana Shire. Mayor Nev Ferrier emphasised the significance of this milestone, saying, "This is the beginning of a new era in the Banana Shire. Let us continue fostering innovation, collaboration, and sustainable practices as we shape a better future for generations to come."
