Construction has commenced on the Moura Library and Museum

Published: 16th November 2023

Construction of the state-of-the-art Moura Library and Museum has commenced thanks to the generous contribution of $6 million from the Resource Community Infrastructure Fund (RCIF) and an additional $2.6 million from the Banana Shire Council. The new facility will span over 234 square metres for the library, 255 square metres for the museum, and an additional 150 square metres for the Council Office and Collaboration Meeting Room and, promises to enhance community access to key facilities and deliver an elevated level of service.

The Museum, integrated with the Miners Memorial, will become a symbol of community pride, acknowledging the prosperity brought to the region by mining, while also paying tribute to the tragic history of mine accidents and the lives lost. The library will provide a significant enhancement of services to youth and adult members, offering a secure, safe environment for local youth to meet, relax, learn, and access entertainment.

“This project marks a significant step forward for our community. The new Moura Library and Museum will not only preserve our mining heritage but also create a vibrant hub for residents and visitors. With increased access, expanded services, and improved facilities, we are excited to enhance the overall quality of life for our community and boost tourism in the region,” said Mayor of Banana Shire Council Nev Ferrier.

Assistant Minister for Local Government Nikki Boyd said that the Palaszczuk Government was investing directly into resource communities.

“The Museum and Library in Moura will be fantastic assets for the whole region, and I can see why the community is so excited about these projects,” Assistant Minister Boyd said.

“The Resources Community Infrastructure Fund ensures that when resource industry is doing well, that it’s communities like Moura who benefit.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s progressive coal royalties are ensuring that these benefits are shared with regional Queensland.”

This transformative project will create a vibrant hub connecting various adjacent community facilities, seamlessly directing visitors and residents towards the Gillespie Street Central Business District. It will serve as a central location for information, encouraging visitors to explore other local and regional attractions.

The new facility will operate during regular hours, with co-located Council staff supporting volunteer hours to ensure that the museum and library are open for a total of 60 hours per week, a substantial increase from the previous 30 and 21 hours, respectively. The new library will be significantly larger than the existing one, providing distinct areas for youth, young adults, and seniors, along with indoor and outdoor activity spaces. The library's team anticipates expanding their regular programs to meet the growing demand in the community, increasing from 5 to 8 programs per week. Patron numbers are expected to rise by 25%, from the current average of 670 to 840 per year. The museum is also poised to double its annual visitors, going from 500 to 1000, thanks to increased access hours and a wider range of exhibits.

The construction contract for this crucial project has been awarded to Diversified Building Solutions Rockhampton following a competitive tender process. They are set to bring their expertise and dedication to ensure the successful completion of the Moura Library and Museum.
