Banana Shire Council Announces 2024 Australia Day Award Recipients

The recipients of the 2024 Banana Shire Australia Day Awards were announced this morning at the official ceremony held at the Biloela Showgrounds. Harry Johnson was named Citizen of the Year for his 33-year commitment to community involvement.

 

The recipients of the 2024 Banana Shire Australia Day Awards are:

 

Citizen of the Year - Harry Johnson 

Harry Johnson, a Taroom resident since 1990, receives Citizen of the Year for his 33-year commitment to community improvement. Active in the Taroom Lions Club, Fishing and Restocking Club, and Palliative Care Group, Harry organizes events, promotes family-friendly activities, and supports environmental initiatives. 

 

Young Citizen of the Year - Samantha Dendle 

Samantha Dendle is awarded Young Citizen of the Year for her leadership as Queensland Youth Parliament Deputy Premier, Long Tan Award for Leadership, and contributions to Country to Canberra and UQ Changemakers. Samantha excels academically, contributes to local sports groups, and supports community initiatives. 

 

Arts and Culture Award - Sarah Larson 

Sarah Larson, with over 30 years in the arts, earns the Arts and Culture Award for empowering emerging artists, showcasing her solo exhibition 'Eclectic Echoes,' and leading community art engagement programs. As an author, illustrator, and holistic practitioner, Sarah enriches the community through diverse cultural dimensions. 

 

Young Arts and Culture Award - Acacia Ferry 

Acacia Ferry's commitment to art, education, and charity earns her the Young Arts and Culture Award. Acacia actively participates in an Art Engagement program, volunteers at St Joseph's Kindergarten, and contributes at charitable events, showcasing her multifaceted talents. 

 

Community Volunteer Award - Allan Tappin 

Allan Tappin receives the Community Volunteer Award for his 50-year dedication to various aspects of Biloela Shire's community life. From supporting education and sports to volunteering at Wahroonga Aged Care Facility, Allan's cheerful demeanour significantly contributes to community happiness. 

 

Sportsperson of the Year - Matt Drysdale 

Matt Drysdale, crowned 2023 Queensland Coal Shovelling Champion, earns Sportsperson of the Year. Shovelling an impressive 500kg of coal in 38 seconds at the Moura Coal and Country Festival, Matt aims for the national title, fuelled by his childhood dream. 

 

Young Sportsperson Award - Maia Shoecraft 

Maia Shoecraft, at 11 years old, becomes the Young Sportsperson for securing the title of National Long-Distance Para Champion. Her exceptional talent, dedication, and skill make her a rising star in para-athletics, inspiring others in the sporting arena. 

 

Sports Coach, Official and/or Administrator Award – Dillon West  

Dillon West, a dedicated cricket coach, receives the award for going above and beyond for every player. His commitment to coaching, field preparation, and club growth reflects his outstanding coaching skills and contribution to the community. 

 

Community Group or Team Award - Banana Shire Historical Society 

Banana Shire Historical Society, with a dedicated membership of 40, is recognised for preserving local history and maintaining Greycliffe Homestead. Their achievements include extensive renovations and securing grants for catering equipment, leaving a historical legacy in the Banana Shire. 

 

Community Event of the Year Award – Pub in the Paddock Men’s Night Jambin State School P&C 

Jambin State School P&C's initiative, "Pub in the Paddock Men's Night," addressing men's mental health, receives the Community Event of the Year Award. The event attracted over 150 rural men, fostering community bonding and addressing the stigma of mental health. 

 

Mayor Nev Ferrier presented the awards to the recipients at the ceremony in Biloela today saying, “It was an honour to present these awards today. These people do so much for our community and it is wonderful to see them get the recognition they deserve”.

 

Banana Shire Council received a record 62 nominations for the 2024 Australia Day Awards. The Award Recipients were announced during the official Australia Day Ceremony at the Biloela Showgrounds on January 26, 2024.
