Banana Shire Council is proposing to develop a new landfill site at Boundary Hill East, designed to meet the region’s growing waste management needs and support its long-term sustainability goals. The new landfill may replace the Trap Gully site, which is nearing the end of its operational capacity after decades of service.

The Boundary Hill East landfill, located approximately 10 km from Trap Gully, will be equipped with modern protective measures to ensure minimal environmental impact. Studies have already been conducted to assess air quality and traffic impacts. The nearest residential property is more than 4 km from the site, providing an added layer of security.

The proposed new landfill could be operational in around two years, with designs and approvals currently underway. Banana Shire Council is also focused on community consultation and will be holding public information sessions to ensure that residents are informed and have a chance to provide feedback.

The proposed new landfill is being developed in alignment with the Council’s broader waste management strategy, which includes ongoing recycling initiatives aimed at reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. Current recycling programs in Banana Shire include blue-lid bins for paper and cardboard, as well as recycling for metals, green waste, engine oil, batteries, and more. The proposed new landfill will play a key role in managing residual waste that cannot be reused or recycled.
